The Land Transport Authority (LTA) seeks to partner the research community and industry in co-creating innovative and practical solutions to meet Singapore’s current transport challenges. To this end, LTA has today launched two grant calls inviting the research community and industry to submit research and development proposals aimed at improving our land transport system.
2. The two grant calls launched today comprise four focus areas:

| 1. | Reducing Duration of Public Transport Journeys
Researchers are invited to leverage data analytics to identify bottlenecks and propose new solutions to reduce the duration of public transport journeys. Possible solutions include new ticketing technologies to reduce time required to board and alight from buses, or dynamic lane markings to provide buses with priority. |
| 2. | Optimising Public Transport Services to Meet Demand
To develop new ways to meet public transport demand – particularly during peak hours –while optimising resources (by either leveraging existing resources or even reducing resource needs), so as to ensure that public transport is an affordable and preferred mode of public transport for commuters. Possible solutions could include modelling and simulation studies to optimise bus operations. |
| 3. | Making Better Land Use of Road Space
Roads currently makes up 12 per cent of Singapore’s land area. This focus area seeks solutions on ways to reduce road space, which can then be reclaimed for other purposes. Proposals should identify the challenges or considerations for various urban typologies, suggest possibilities for how the road space could be better used, and highlight how the solutions can be implemented. |
| 4. | Improving Accuracy of Calculating Soil Excavation Volume
Bulk excavation of soil is carried out before the construction of underground depots can commence. The volume of bulk excavation has to be tracked accurately to monitor the excavation rate and factors, such as volume of good earth and soft clay. This focus area seeks new ways to improve the accuracy of measuring bulk excavations for volumetric analysis, and to provide a fast and reliable 3D model of sites for record and data analysis. |
3. The grant calls are open to all research and development organisations in Singapore, including publicly-funded Institutes of Higher Learning, not-for-profit research institutions, public sector agencies, companies and company-affiliated research entities.
