Keeping Merdeka Bridge Safe

The 610-m long Merdeka Bridge was supported by 26 piers, about 24m apart. LTA had cut the platform of the Merdeka Bridge 24.5m away from the end at the joint above pier 2.

This was to isolate the first span of the Merdeka Bridge to reduce the stress on its remaining parts. The first pier was adjacent to the incident site.

The Merdeka Bridge was opened in 1956. It measured 610 m long and 30 wide, spanning over the Crawford Underpass. Nicoll Highway runs from the junction with Stamford Road until the junction with Mountbatten Road, passing over the Merdeka Bridge.
