Work on the Punggol LRT system began in June 2000 and was completed in
December 2004. LTA has since handed over the system to SBS Transit, the
operator of the system. This line will not only improve travel within
Punggol 21 New Town. It will also provide residents with a direct link
to the North East Line at the Punggol MRT station.
Residents need not wait long to hop on this
new line. Passenger service is expected to begin in the first quarter
of 2005, once SBS Transit completes testing the systems.
A consortium made up of SembCorp Industries, Mitsubishi
Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Corporation undertook construction of
the Punggol LRT system.
Like the Sengkang LRT, stations will just be a stone's throw
from the flats. Most blocks lie within a 400 m radius of the LRT stations.
The line will also use the same made-in-Japan trains on the Sengkang LRT
System. Unlike the Bukit Panjang LRT vehicles that operate in pairs during
peak hours, these trains will operate on their own. There's also an emergency
exit at the rear for a swift and safe evacuation.
