The Sengkang LRT line which has become
a part of the estate's skyline, got off to a smooth start in January 2003.
Now, commuters at Sengkang New Town enjoy a convenient and efficient feeder
service.
The 11 km Sengkang line has two loops -
the east loop with six stations and the west with eight. Both loops have
interchange facilities with the North East Line at Sengkang MRT Station.
For now, only the east loop is opened as
most of the residents live in the area. The less-populated west loop will
be opened at a later date.
Contracts for the Sengkang LRT were awarded
in 1998 and the LRT vehicle for Sengkang made its debut in July 2001.
2002 saw the completion of structural works and the installation of mechanical
and electrical systems The Sengkang LRT was handed to operator SBS Transit
in the last quarter of 2002.
The Sengkang LRT is just a short walk away for most residents.
Most of the blocks lie within 400m of any station.
Commuters get to enjoy a scenic ride as this is the first
time an LRT spans a river, in this case, the Punggol River.
With a basic colour scheme of blue and white and hot pink
handrails, the vibrantly coloured train carriages are eye-candy. Each
carriage is 11.2 m long and can hold 105 passengers. The trains run at
an average speed of 30 km/h and have a maximum speed of 70 km/h.

The design of the stations is distinctively simple, yet
functionally elegant, so as to blend in with the estate.
