Overview

As a city state, Singapore is the second most densely populated country in the world. Today, roads take up 12 percent of our total land area and the demands on our land transport system are set to increase by 60 percent, from our current 8.9 million daily journeys to 14.3 million by 2020. Making public transport the centrepiece of our land transport system will be crucial to keep congestion in check and help protect the environment.

Providing commuters with a wide spectrum of transport choices

Singaporeans enjoy a varied range of public transport alternatives that provide services covering the entire island at reasonable fares. This includes the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, buses and taxis.

LTA aims to increase our target of making 70 percent of all morning peak hour trips on public transport by 2020.

To enhance the integration and efficiency of public transport services, LTA will take on the role of a central bus network planner by 2009. LTA will enhance the hub-and-spoke system, so that our bus and rail services work in partnership.
