With the new MRT extension up and running, commuters can now
choose to take off on a fast train. Since 8 February 2002, foreigners
and Singaporeans alike can take the MRT all the way to Changi
Airport.
Branching off from the existing
East-West Line, the Changi Airport MRT Extension (CAE)
also provides commuters with a quick and convenient passage to
the Singapore Expo. The Expo Station and Changi Airport Station
were officially opened on 10 January 2001 and 27 February 2002
respectively.
The Expo
Station is recognised as an important transport node,
linking businessmen, conference and exhibition organisers and
traders to the Singapore Expo, Changi Business Park and Changi
South Industrial Park.
Keeping prospective developments of Changi Airport in mind, the
Changi Airport
Station is strategically located between Terminal 2 and
Terminal 3. Passengers going to Terminal 1 can take
a short ride on the skytrains.

Catered for the luggage-toting travellers in mind, some of the
trains have been retrofitted with luggage racks and have free
spaces for baggage at the doorway. Each train car also has LCD
and LED panels displaying information such as station name, next
stop and end station. Wider faregates are also installed for the
benefit of commuters.

Nestled
in the heart of the world's leading international airport,
the Changi Airport Station was constructed under much public
scrutiny. Although work was carried out 18 metres below
ground, safety was of paramount importance. Stringent monitoring
practices was adopted and more than 4,000 measuring points
were put in place to ensure nothing went wrong. Over the
entire duration of construction, it was estimated that a
total of two million measurements were taken!
