Public transport is regulated to ensure that:
LTA LTA builds and owns the rapid transit system or rail infrastructure in Singapore. The rapid transit systems are then licensed to public transport operators, such as SMRT Ltd, SBS Transit Ltd and SLRT Pte Ltd under the Rapid Transit Systems Act. LTA sets high service and maintenance standards and regulates the operators of the rapid transit systems, to ensure that rail services are safe, reliable and comfortable. LTA licences Public Service Vehicles, including all types of buses, taxis, trishaws and rental cars. It also licences the drivers of omnibuses (or scheduled buses), private hire buses, excursion buses and school buses, and regulate their conduct. Public Transport Council In August 1987, the Public Transport Council (PTC) , a statutory board under MOT, was established to balance the need to safeguard public interest and the financial viability of public transport operators. In particular, PTC seeks to create a comprehensive bus network, ensure quality bus services and affordable fares for the public. The functions of the PTC include approving bus routes, regulating bus service standards and approving fares for scheduled bus services, the MRT and LRT services.
