In addition to ongoing works for 10 Silver Zones, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will build another 10 Silver Zones, which are expected to be completed in 2020. Residential areas such as Ang Mo Kio, Potong Pasir, Tampines and Yishun will have enhanced and customised road safety features to remind motorists to slow down and keep a lookout for pedestrians, as well as remind elderly pedestrians to remain vigilant when crossing roads. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a contract to renew the Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) system to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Bombardier (Singapore). The renewal works will commence in the first half of 2018, and residents can look forward to more reliable rides from 2022. For more details, please see the attached media release.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and train operator SMRT have made significant progress in rejuvenating the North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL) through additional engineering hours over 10 weekends since December 2017. The early closure, late opening and full Sunday closure of MRT stations on weekends have provided additional time for our engineering teams to carry out planned maintenance and renewal works on the tracks, stations and train depots. As announced at the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR)’s 2017 Committee of Supply Debate, NEA will introduce the Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) to replace the Carbon Emissions-Based Vehicle Scheme (CEVS) for all new cars, taxis and newly imported used cars with effect from 1 January 2018. As announced at the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR)’s Committee of Supply Debate 2017, NEA will enhance the Early Turnover Scheme (ETS) for commercial vehicles. The enhanced scheme will run from 1 August 2017 to 31 July 2019 and will provide incentives for the owners of Category C diesel vehicles with Euro 2 or Euro 3 emission standards to turnover to Euro 6 (or equivalent) vehicles. The move, which aims to encourage vehicle owners to replace their older and more pollutive diesel vehicles with newer and cleaner models, is in line with the Government’s efforts to improve Singapore’s ambient air quality by reducing vehicular emissions.
