Opening up bus lanes will slow bus travel time

Media Replies 13 Oct 2012 bus lanes

We thank Mr Felix Ng Hong Peow and Mr Somasudaram Sandiran for their suggestions to allow motorcycles and taxis to use the bus lanes (TODAY, 5 Oct).

We implemented the bus lane scheme to give priority to buses as they are more efficient movers of passengers.  But for bus lanes to be effective, bus movements must not be impeded during bus lane operating hours.

Motorcycles make up 15% of the total vehicle population in Singapore or about 143,000 motorcycles. Allowing motorcycles to use the bus lane will definitely slow down the travel speeds of buses. Similarly, if taxis are allowed to use the bus lane, bus travel time will also be adversely affected by the picking up and alighting activities of taxis.

Currently, normal bus lanes operate between 7.30am and 9.30am and between 5pm and 8pm on weekdays, while full-day bus lanes, which are predominantly located in the city centre, operate between 7.30am and 8pm from Mondays to Saturdays. These are periods where the bus volume plying the bus lanes is at its highest.

Motorcyclists and taxis can use bus lanes during the non-operating hours, when bus volumes are lower.
