Shorter Waiting Time with 15 More Trains for Downtown Line

News Releases 28 Mar 2013 Downtown Line (DTL)

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has purchased 15 more Downtown Line (DTL) trains from the consortium of Bombardier Transportation GmbH / Bombardier (Singapore) Pte Ltd / Changchun Bombardier Railway Vehicles Company Ltd, at an approximate value of $119.2 million.  This is in addition to the 73 trains already bought for the 42-km rail line that will run from Bukit Panjang through the Central Business District area to Expo.

More trains during peak hours

2          Mr Chua Chong Kheng, Deputy Chief Executive (Infrastructure and Development), LTA said:  “The 15 additional three-car electric trains will allow for more trains to be run during the morning and evening peak hours when needed on the Downtown Line.  This will result in shorter waiting times for commuters.”

3          The trains are designed in Bombardier Transportation’s head office in Hennigsdorf, Germany and assembled in Changchun, China. These additional trains are expected to be delivered from 2015 onwards in time for the operations of DTL Stage 2 (DTL2) in 2015 and DTL Stage 3 (DTL3) in 2017.

Update on Downtown Line 1

4          To date, Bombardier has delivered five of the 11 trains for DTL Stage 1 (DTL1). LTA together with the operator, SBS Transit are currently conducting the necessary tests to ensure safety standards, functional performance and systems compatibility requirements are met before revenue service of the DTL1 starts at the end of this year.

5          Works on the six DTL1 stations are progressing at different stages. Most of the stations are undergoing electrical and mechanical systems testing and commissioning. Works are also ongoing to complete architecture works in the station and external works at ground level.
