We refer to Mr Gurmit Singh Kullar’s letter "Why only three-car trains?” (ST, 3 Apr).
In planning a new rail line, LTA takes many factors into consideration – from the land needed for a higher capacity and larger stations as well as the demands of future growth.
To make for a robust planning process, LTA works closely with relevant planning agencies to review existing and planned developments, population density along the corridor, and the increased mode shift towards public transport, among other things. Taking all this into account, the Downtown Line has been planned optimally as an automatic three-car train system.
To allow more trains to be run during morning and evening peak hours, LTA will add another 15 trains to the 73 trains bought earlier. This will shorten waiting times for commuters.
We thank Mr Kullar for his letter and for the opportunity to explain.
