We refer to Ms Tricia Tay Hui Yi’s letter, “Extend free travel to more MRT stations” and Mr George Seah Boon Huat’s letter, “A learning journey that starts with the MRT?” (TODAY, 21 May 2013).
The free pre-peak travel trial aims to ease crowding during the morning peak hour along the most crowded stretches of the rail network. These are especially the city-bound stretches, and thus the trial covers exits in the city centre stations. Students travelling into the city to get to school, as well as parents dropping off children at childcare centres near the 16 designated stations will also benefit from the trial as well.
Commuters travelling outside the city area can join the ‘Incentives for Singapore’s Commuters’, or INSINC, scheme to accumulate points for rewards when they travel during off-peak hours. (www.insinc.com.sg.)
We thank the public for their interest and suggestions on the free pre-peak travel trial. We will review the free travel trial after one year to see what lessons and ideas might apply.
