33 Contractors Honoured for Excellent Workplace Safety Practices

News Releases 04 Sep 2013 Annual Safety Award Convention (ASAC)

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) honoured 33 contractors for excellent Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) practices at the 15th Annual Safety Award Convention (ASAC) this morning. Ssangyong Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd received the top award, the LTA Contractors Challenge Shield, for its work on Contract 921 to construct Rochor and Little India stations under the Downtown Line 2 project.  Please refer to the full list of winners in Annex A.

2. LTA Chairman, Mr Michael Lim commended the contractors for showing a marked improvement in the safety records since the launch of the “Zero Accident Movement” in 2012. Accident severity rate fell from 557 man-days lost per million man-hours worked in 2012 to 138 for the first seven months of 2013. Over the same period, accident frequency rate also fell from 0.38 accidents per million man-hours to 0.32.

3. Building upon the improved safety records, the theme for this year’s convention “Achieving Zero Accident through Hearts, Eyes & You” aims to encourage a safety culture where everyone places safety as the top priority, is vigilant of danger and is empowered to take action in any potentially dangerous situation.

4. This year, a total of 50 participating contractors from various categories were eligible for the award. The finalists for the LTA Contractors Challenge Shield are shortlisted under the Mega Category following a stringent audit, which includes a comprehensive review of the site's WSH management system and worksite practices.

Two New Categories of Safety Awards

5.  Two new categories of WSH awards were also presented today. The “Qualified Person Supervision (QPS) Award” was presented for positive contributions to workplace safety and health issues by QPS. QPS are external consultants who are required to undertake site supervision of structural works to ensure that they follow the approved structural plans and works are carried out in accordance with the Building Control Act.  The “Innovative Noise Management Award” was also presented to contractors who have shown innovative methods in managing construction noise.

About ASAC

6. ASAC was inaugurated in 1999 to recognise contractors who have been proactive and successful in promoting WSH management practices at their worksites, ensuring high health, safety and welfare standards of the workers, and giving due consideration to protecting the public and the environment.
