We refer to Mr Darren Chan’s and Mr Young Pak Nang’s letters on Wi-Fi access at MRT stations (The Straits Times, 14 January 2014).
LTA is providing Wi-Fi connections at transport nodes as part of our effort to improve commuting experience. The first batch of stations include the North East Line (NEL) MRT stations as well as the busiest stations on the North South East West and Circle Line. NEL stations were included in this initial exercise because many stations along the other lines are still undergoing various phases of improvement work for rail renewal. The two-year project timeline enables us to assess the suitability of Wi-Fi access in different station settings as well as the feasibility of expanding coverage to MRT tunnels. We need time to do this, but once we have a good sense of what adjustments and specifications are needed, we can proceed more quickly and move ahead with additional installations.
LTA will also be working closely with IDA and the Wireless@SG operators to ensure that the Wi-Fi service meets required performance standards.
We thank Mr Chan and Mr Young for the opportunity to clarify.
