We refer to Mr Kevin Lam Koi Yau’s letter, ‘Make Clementi the next cycling town’ (Straits Times, 17 March 2014).
As set out in our Land Transport Master Plan 2013, our long term goal is to build a cycling path network in every HDB town so that people can choose to safely cycle to the MRT station and neighbourhood centres. The latest batch of towns announced, Bishan, Bukit Panjang and Woodlands, is part of our efforts to move towards this goal.
We have prioritised the implementation of the cycling paths based on the characteristics of the towns. Towns with strong demand for cycling infrastructures by local communities, and which are close to other similar towns are grouped together for early implementation. Our plans also take into account ongoing town projects such as Jurong Lake District and Bedok Town upgrading undertaken by other agencies, and we may implement the cycling paths in tandem with these town projects for better coordination.
We have moved closer to our goal with the completion of the Tampines and Sembawang cycling path networks last year. Works are still ongoing in Pasir Ris and Yishun, and we expect the Pasir Ris Network to be completed by this year. It will take some time for all the cycling infrastructure projects to be completed, but we like to reassure that we are working hard on this.
As part of our plans, we will be working with the relevant agencies and stakeholders to eventually implement a cycling path network in Clementi Town. We thank Mr Lam for the opportunity to clarify.
