91 Trains To Serve Commuters in the Northern and Eastern Regions of Singapore

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a contract worth approximately S$749 million to Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd/CSR Qingdao Sifang Co. Ltd/Kawasaki Heavy Industries (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. Consortium for the purchase of 91 new four–car trains for the Thomson and Eastern Region Lines. When completed, the Thomson and Eastern Region Lines will run as one line.

  1. These fully automated and driverless trains will be the first in Singapore with five doors on each side of each car to allow smoother passenger boarding and alighting. The new trains will also have improved electric current regeneration capability that will lead to better energy savings. Kawasaki Heavy Industries is responsible for the overall train design and CSR Qingdao Sifang is responsible for producing the train body shell and the final assembly. The trains will be operated from the 750V d.c. (volts direct current) third rail power supply system on the Thomson Line and Eastern Region Lines. Driverless trains are currently in use on North East, Circle and Downtown Lines.
  2. Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. has been in the railway manufacturing industry for over a century. Other than supplying trains in the Japanese domestic market, Kawasaki’s existing overseas projects include metro trains for the New York City Transit Authority and the Washington Metropolitan Area Authority.  In Singapore, Kawasaki is the supplier with the most number of trains on the North South East West Line (NSEWL). The first delivery was for the inauguration fleet of 66 number of six–car trains in 1986. Subsequently, additional fleets of 21 and 22 trains were delivered in 1999 and 2011 respectively. Currently, the Consortium is in progress of delivering 13 trains this year and a further 28 from 2016.
