We refer to Mr Wang Ya Fa’s letter “Safety Hazards, Complaints Did Not Bring About Solutions” (Lianhe Zaobao, 21 May 2014).
Mr Wang raised the concern that the tables and chairs placed along the public side-road and walkways by some food and beverage operators in the Simpang Bedok area are safety hazards.
We are aware of the obstruction issues in Simpang Bedok and a joint working committee comprising representatives from the relevant agencies, such as the Land Transport Authority (LTA), Urban Redevelopment Authority, Singapore Land Authority, National Environment Agency and Singapore Civil Defence Force have been working together since mid 2013 to resolve these issues.
LTA has been taking prompt enforcement actions against the F&B operators for obstructing the public streets, footways and side roads. Under the Street Works Act, they have to keep five‐footways, public walkways and public streets clear so as not to impede the movement of pedestrians. We will continue to work with the relevant agencies and community to ensure that our public roads and walkways are safe for all users.
We thank Mr Wang for the opportunity to clarify and welcome him to contact LTA at 1800 CALL LTA (1800-225 5582) or email@example.com should he encounter similar obstruction issues.
