We refer to Mr Chan Kwee Seng’s letter “Link north and east rail lines” (The Straits Times, 3 June 2014).
In our Land Transport Master Plan 2013, LTA announced aggressive rail expansion plans. From now till the year 2030, LTA will be constructing five new rail lines and three extensions to existing lines: Downtown Line, Thomson Line, Eastern Region Line, Jurong Region Line, Cross Island Line, North East Line Extension, Circle Line 6, and Downtown Line Extension. When all these projects are completed, Singapore’s rail network will double from 178 kilometres today, to about 360 kilometres in 2030 to serve the current and projected growth areas. With this, 8 in 10 households will be within a 10-minute walk of a train station.
Commuters who wish to travel from the north to the east can use the existing Circle Line as well as the upcoming Downtown and Cross Island Lines to shorten their travelling time. LTA will continue to monitor the pace of developments along that corridor to assess need and feasibility of rail development plans required in future.
We thank Mr Chan for your suggestion.
