In response to media queries on Malaysian media reports on tolls at the Causeway checkpoint, a spokesperson from LTA said that Singapore’s long-standing policy is to match Malaysia’s toll rates. This reflects the shared nature of the Causeway.
The LTA spokesperson clarified that recent media reports suggesting that only motorists using the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) highway would pay the increased tolls when they enter the Malaysian Causeway CIQ were inaccurate. The Malaysian tolls are collected at the CIQ. All motorists who pass through the CIQ pay the increased Malaysian tolls, even if they do not use the EDL highway after exiting the CIQ. On the other hand, motorists who use the EDL highway but did not pass through the CIQ do not pay tolls. This means that the increased tolls are effectively Causeway tolls.
The LTA spokesperson said that should Malaysia reduce or do away with the toll charges, Singapore will do the same.
