We refer to Mr Edwin Pang’s letter “Take firm action against modified e-bike users, shops” (ST, 12 October 2015).
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) takes a serious view of the use of unapproved or illegally modified motorised bicycles on public roads. For safety reasons, only low-powered models of motorised bicycles approved by LTA and affixed with an LTA seal are allowed for use on public roads. Motorised bicycles must not be used on footpaths.
The penalties for using or selling an unapproved or illegally modified motorised bicycle are stiff. Anyone found using or keeping an unapproved motorised bicycle may be charged in Court, and upon conviction, be fined up to $1,000 or jailed up to 3 months for the first offence. For subsequent offences, the offender may be fined up to $2,000 or jailed up to 6 months upon conviction.
For using or selling an illegally modified motorised bicycle, or illegally modifying it, an offender may be fined up to $2,000 or jailed up to 3 months upon conviction for the first offence. For subsequent offences, the offender may be fined up to $5,000 or jailed up to 6 months upon conviction.
LTA enforcement officers conduct checks on illegal motorised bicycles during their daily patrols and targeted enforcement at hotspots. We will step up enforcement on errant users and sellers of illegal or illegally modified motorised bicycles. Members of the public who often spot illegally modified motorised bicycles at certain areas may alert LTA via 1800-CALL-LTA or feedback@lta.gov.sg
We thank Mr Pang for his feedback.
