Factsheet: “Walk Cycle Ride SG”

News Releases 21 Jan 2016 Factsheet Downtown Line 3 (DTL3) North South Expressway (NSE) Addendum

As announced in the Ministry of Transport’s Addendum to the President’s Address, our aspiration is for walking, cycling, and riding public transport to be the way of life for Singaporeans.

2   In addition to our plans for continued expansion of our public transport network and improved reliability and service levels, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is planning two signature ‘conversion’ projects.

North-South Corridor

3  The North-South Expressway (NSE) was originally conceived as a 21.5 km road to connect growing towns in the North region to the city centre.

4  LTA will redesign the NSE to create a North-South Corridor which will also serve public bus commuters, cyclists and pedestrians. See Annex A for a preliminary visual of the concept. The new design will incorporate dedicated bus lanes for express bus services serving the North-South Corridor. There will be dedicated cycling and wide walking paths along the surface corridor, with ample greenery for shade. A cycling trunk route into the city that spans the entire North-South Corridor to the city will be built.

5  LTA is working on the revised plans. The final design and project timeline will be released at a later date.

Bringing Bencoolen Street to Life

6  Part of Bencoolen Street between Middle Road and Bras Basah Road has been closed since October 2011 for the construction of Downtown Line 3’s (DTL3) Bencoolen station. When Bencoolen Street is re-opened to the public in 2017, two of the four original car lanes will be converted into wide footpaths lined with trees and benches for pedestrians. There will also be a dedicated cycling path connecting Rochor Canal and Bukit Timah to the Central Business District. More bicycle parking facilities will also be provided in the area. A dedicated bus lane will be incorporated into the design of Bencoolen Street.

7  This design will revitalise the Bencoolen Street area and create a more vibrant space, conducive for walking, cycling, and public transport. See Annex B for an artist’s impression.

8  Works are scheduled to start from mid-2016 and will be completed together with the DTL3 station in 2017.

More to Come

9  Aside from these two examples, we are working on other plans to make walking, cycling and riding public transport the way of life for Singaporeans.
