We thank Mr Liu Mutian for his letter ‘Private hire cars should have clearer identification’ (16 Mar).

All chauffeured private hire cars are required to display tamper-evident decals prominently on their front and rear windscreens. These decals serve to clearly identify legitimate private hire cars, enabling both the public and enforcement officers to distinguish them from regular private cars and illegal operators. 

These decals are designed to be non-transferable and cannot be removed once affixed. They are verified during mandatory vehicle inspections to ensure compliance. These measures support road safety and regulatory compliance by making registered vehicles easier to identify whilst deterring unlicensed transport services.
