We refer to the letter “Stricter checks on road surfaces needed after work done” (March 17).

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has guidelines requiring contractors to properly backfill excavated areas with suitable materials after laying cables or pipes. Contractors are also required to ensure that the roads meet LTA’s standards, including smooth and level road surfaces which are safe for use. LTA conducts regular checks to ensure compliance and will penalise contractors who do not adhere to the guidelines.

As underground works could span several days, roads may be temporarily reinstated to allow traffic to flow safely while works are ongoing. During this period, these temporary road reinstatements may not be as smooth as permanent reinstatements which require extensive preparation, specialised equipment and longer uninterrupted work periods. Permanent reinstatements are carried out once the work is completed. 

To help road users differentiate between temporary and permanent road surface conditions, LTA is trialling new interim road reinstatement markings. These visual indicators are designed to alert motorists to the temporary road surface so they can exercise additional caution while driving.
