School zone measures enhanced for safer road environment

Media Replies 13 Jul 2026 road safety

We refer to Ho Cheong Tong’s letter “Review road signs, enforcement practices for school zones” (July 2).

Since Jan 1, the Land Transport Authority has extended the 40kmh speed limit in Enhanced School Zones near primary schools and special schools to apply throughout the day, including weekends and public holidays, instead of only during specified periods such as school arrival and dismissal times.

This approach standardises the 40kmh speed limit throughout the day, removing any ambiguity about when the speed limit is in effect. It also encourages motorists who regularly use these roads to develop the habit of travelling at safer speeds within a school zone.

The signs and road markings outside CHIJ Toa Payoh are consistent with those used at school zones across Singapore. At the start of the school zone, the speed limit sign is clearly displayed, together with the “SLOW” and “SCHOOL” road markings, followed by the distinctive red pavements.

These features are intended to provide clear visual cues for motorists to reduce their speed. Beyond road signs and markings, the ERP2 On-Board Unit also alerts motorists when they are entering a school zone.

Together with the enhanced penalties for speeding in school zones, these changes reflect our commitment to creating a safer road environment at all times and reducing the risk of accidents in areas where children and other vulnerable road users may be present.
