Public Transport Safety and Security Awards and Bus Safety Roadshow
The Public Transport Safety and Security Awards (PTSSA) and Bus Safety Roadshow (BSR) bring together public transport workers, operators and members of the public to celebrate excellence in safety and security, while raising awareness of bus safety. The PTSSA and BSR are taking place at One Punggol from 21 to 22 August 2026.
2. The PTSSA ceremony, held in the morning of 21 August, recognises outstanding public transport workers and operators for their contributions to keeping our public transport network safe and secure. This is the fifth time we are conducting this annual award ceremony.
3. The BSR, which runs from the afternoon of 21 August to 22 August, is one of the Bus Safety Tripartite Taskforce's (BSTT) Recommendations. In its second run this year, it seeks to raise public bus safety awareness among commuters and road users.
Public Transport Safety and Security Awards (PTSSA)
4. About 550 award winners and representatives from the public transport sector attended this year’s PTSSA ceremony. For the first time, award recipients were joined by their family members, in recognition of their invaluable support to allow our public transport workers to give their best to keep commuters safe and secure. This year also saw the inauguration of the Bus Captain Safe Driving Award, introduced as part of the BSTT's recommendations to recognise bus captains who have maintained safe driving records for one, two, five and ten years since the introduction of the Bus Contracting Model in 2016. A total of 5,364 bus captains were honoured under this new award, comprising:
- 1,735 in the one-year category,
- 1,710 in the two-year category,
- 1,081 in the five-year category, and
- 838 in the ten-year category
5. Award recipients will receive a safe driving badge and monetary incentives ranging from $200 to $2,000, with higher amounts awarded for longer periods of safe driving. Higher tier awards such as fifteen and twenty-years of safe driving, will be introduced in subsequent years.
6. The operator category awards recognised rail, bus and point-to-point transport operators with the best safety records, and a strong commitment to commuter and workplace safety, with five operators receiving awards this year. As in previous years, the Operator Excellence Award winner in each of the three transport domains – rail, bus and point-to-point – will have their name inscribed on a “Challenge Shield”. The operator that accumulates the most awards in their respective category over a 10-year period will retain the shield permanently, in recognition of its consistent excellence in safety.
7. The Special Commendation Award recognises public transport workers for their swift and decisive actions in averting potential safety or security incidents. 60 individuals received the award this year. Another 190 individuals received the Star Award for developing new tools, systems and processes to enhance safety and security of the public transport system in the course of their work. Please refer to the Annex for the full list of award recipients.
8. In addition, 71 Safety Champions from the public transport and point-to-point transport sector were appointed this year. Safety Champions play an important role in promoting a strong safety culture at the workplace by mentoring their colleagues and encouraging safe work practices, as part of tripartite efforts to promote workplace safety.
Bus Safety Roadshow
9. Jointly organised by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Ministry of Transport, the Bus Safety Roadshow is also supported by the National Transport Workers’ Union, Traffic Police (TP), Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC), as well as the four bus operators (Go-Ahead Singapore, SBS Transit, SMRT Buses and Tower Transit Singapore).
10. Members of the public can visit a range of exhibition booths and presentations to pick up safety tips for bus passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. They can also participate in interactive activities, including opportunities to experience the challenges of driving a bus through simulators.
Ongoing efforts in implementing BSTT recommendations
11. The BSR is one of the Bus Safety Tripartite Taskforce’s recommendations. Since the BSTT submitted its recommendations in March 2025, LTA has been working with tripartite partners and stakeholders to progressively implement measures to better support bus captains and enhance bus safety.
Enhancing Training and Working Conditions for Bus Captains
12. As of July 2026, 99% of bus captains have completed the "Bus Captain Drive Safe" refresher programme, which aims to raise safety awareness and reinforce safe driving practices. All bus captains will complete this by October 2026.
13. To reduce driver fatigue and improve bus safety, LTA has also been working with bus operators to review bus routes with long runtime exceeding two hours. To date, 10 of these 54 long services have been reviewed and improved through measures such as mid-route driver swaps and conversion of continuous loop services to bi-directional routes.
Leveraging Technology to Better Support Bus Captains
14. To enhance passenger safety, LTA has been piloting audio safety announcements on 11 bus services since August 2025, reminding passengers to hold onto hand grips and grab poles before the bus moves off. The feature has been well received and will continue to be available on these services. LTA will progressively deploy a fully automated safety audio announcement feature across the bus fleet from the end of 2027, in tandem with the upgrade to the Bus Fleet Management System (BFMS).
Creating a Safer Road Environment
15. To enhance road safety and promote considerate road use, LTA has successfully completed trials for an AI-powered video analytics system leveraging existing cameras onboard buses, with the system achieving an average accuracy of 90% across the scenarios tested. Beyond detecting errant motorists who encroach into bus lanes or illegally park along roads, the system is also capable of identifying road infrastructure defects and non-compliant road works. This will enhance LTA’s monitoring capabilities across the bus network, facilitating timely rectifications or enforcement as needed to make the road safer for buses and other road users. Progressive deployment of the system will begin from the fourth quarter of 2026, with expansion to all bus routes by 2030. LTA will continue to work with operators on measures to facilitate smoother bus movements at and around bus stops.
Strengthening Public Education on Bus Safety
16. Beyond the roadshow, LTA has been actively collaborating with operators, SRSC and TP to promote safe commuting practices through awareness posters, social media campaigns, and engagement with schools. Since May 2025, LTA has also partnered with the Agency for Integrated Care to conduct bus safety talks on safe commuting practices at 77 Active Ageing Centres islandwide.
Tripartite Commitment to Upholding Public Bus Safety
17. Tripartite partners will continue to work together to implement the BSTT’s recommendations and uphold our shared commitment to enhance the safety of bus captains, commuters and other road users. Maintaining service standards remains a priority as we implement these measures and refine operational processes. We seek the support of commuters and all road users to play their part in keeping bus journeys safe for everyone.
