Factsheet: World Car-Free Day 2026: More In Every Move

News Releases 02 Sep 2026 World Car-Free Day (WCFD) Factsheet

In conjunction with World Car-Free Day 2026, the Land Transport Authority (LTA), together with government agencies, community organisations and industry partners, will organise a series of activities from September to November 2026. These include The Invisible City, an interactive gamified mobile experience, and Joo Chiat Car-Free Day on 3 October 2026. Through these activities, members of the public can discover more of Singapore by walking, cycling and taking public transport, while also connecting with the communities, heritage and public places around them. More information on the World Car-Free Day 2026 activities can be found on LTA’s website.

Highlights of World Car-Free Day 2026

The Invisible City (1 September to 30 November 2026)

2.        Members of the public can take part in The Invisible City, an interactive gamified mobile experience developed by LTA in partnership with GovTech Singapore. Accessible via the CrowdTaskSG platform, participants can complete location-based challenges by walking, cycling and taking public transport to destinations across Singapore. As they complete each challenge, new elements on a virtual map of Singapore will be progressively revealed, encouraging them to rediscover familiar neighbourhoods and public spaces while learning more about the places, communities and stories that shape everyday life. The challenges, developed in collaboration with government agencies and organisations listed in Annex A, will feature destinations across Singapore, showcasing public spaces, community amenities, places of interest, heritage sites and trails.

Joo Chiat Car-Free Day (3 October 2026, 3.30pm – 9.30pm)

3.        A section of Joo Chiat Road (between Dunman Road and East Coast Road) will be closed to traffic, allowing members of the public to explore one of Singapore's most distinctive heritage neighbourhoods on foot or by bicycle. Co-created with community partners, local businesses and residents, the event celebrates Joo Chiat's rich heritage, vibrant street life and unique identity.

4.        During the day, LTA and partners listed in Annex A will host interactive exhibits, sustainability showcases and family-friendly activities. Members of the public travelling by train to Joo Chiat can also enjoy a music performance staged by SMRT at TEL Marine Parade Station from 4pm to 5pm. Visitors can participate in the Urban Sustainability Bike Tour, a Clean and Green Singapore 2026 activity organised by the National Environment Agency in partnership with the Society of Tourist Guides (Singapore), as well as Sport Singapore’s Heritage Fitness Challenge, alongside pickleball, rollerblading activities, and the Heritage Dance Fitness (Rhythms of Baba Nyonya) segment. In addition, Anywheel, DBS/POSB, HelloRide, Housing & Development Board, Infocomm Media Development Authority’s SG Digital Office, Families for Life, National Arts Council, National Heritage Board, National Parks Board, SBS Transit, SimplyGo and Urban Redevelopment Authority will also offer engaging programmes and experiences for all ages.

5.        In the evening, local community groups will anchor the celebrations. Marine Parade Grassroots, together with Katong Culture and the Katong-Joo Chiat Business Association (KJCBA), will organise a community party featuring activities for all ages. Members of the public can look forward to rich cultural activities, including a Kueh Party, local arts, children activity areas and live performances within and around Joo Chiat Community Club. KJCBA, through its Joo Chiat Street Social initiative, will also bring Joo Chiat businesses onto the streets for the first time, with vibrant zones for food and beverage consumption, pet activities, fitness classes and more.

6.        The programmes showcase how streets can be transformed into vibrant community spaces that encourage active commutes, social connections, placemaking and appreciation of local heritage. This also complements LTA's broader efforts to encourage walking, cycling and public transport through initiatives such as expanding the cycling network, improving first- and last-mile connectivity to public transport, and creating more people-friendly streets across Singapore.

7.        Members of the public are encouraged to take public transport to the event. More information about the road closures and activities at Joo Chiat Car-Free Day 2026 will be progressively made available on LTA’s website closer to the event.

LTA World Car-Free Day Challenge (14 September to 30 September 2026)

8.        LTA is also partnering the Health Promotion Board to encourage more people to incorporate walking into their everyday journeys. Healthy 365 app users can earn a special edition World Car-Free Day badge by clocking at least 10,000 steps for four consecutive days during the challenge period. The challenge allows participants to discover the benefits of walking while building lasting habits that support healthier and more sustainable travel.
