3 emergency escape routes at Orchard MRT station

Media Replies 07 Feb 2008 MRT stations

We refer to Ms Lim Su Ying's letter "Ample escape routes at Orchard MRT?" (The Straits Times, 29 January 2008).

The safety of commuters is of utmost importance. The Orchard MRT station is equipped with three emergency escape routes. These routes are located at the exit staircases accessible from the station platform, the south entrance as well as from the station's new north entrance.

Whilst the previous north entrance towards Orchard Road is currently closed for modification works, the station's new north entrance which is located near to the previous site has the same exit capacity. The new route has been assessed by fire safety engineers and conforms to the established safety standards.

In case of an emergency, SMRT personnel who are trained in safety procedures will be on-hand to respond to the situation.

We hope the above information addresses Ms Lim's concerns.
