We refer to Mr Teng Swee Tian’s letter “Switch off some expressway lights” (TODAY, 18 November).
Our expressway network is well utilised even after midnight, so it is important to ensure that there is minimum lighting for safe driving. Mr Teng’s suggestion to turn off one out of three to five street lights after midnight may have safety implications as this inadvertently results in a pattern of dark and bright patches on the road surface, which may put a visual strain on the driver.
To cut energy consumption, LTA has been exploring new ways to improve our street lighting system by reducing life cycle costs while achieving the required lighting standards. We have already implemented some of the initiatives, including the use of LED lights and motion detectors for pedestrian walkways and overhead bridges, where it is not as critical to have the same levels of illumination needed for expressways.
We thank Mr Teng for his feedback.
