After-market car lamps require proper installation

Media Replies 09 Mar 2013

We refer to the letter from Hng Jiing Yeong, “Shed light on car-lamp rule” in the Straits Times on 5 March 2013.

The LTA allows factory-fitted LED daytime running light and High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps as they are designed and installed to meet international vehicle safety standards. Fitting of aftermarket daytime running lights or HIDs may not comply with the strict safety requirements, and thus is only allowed if certified and endorsed by the vehicle manufacturer. This is to ensure that the lighting system is installed correctly and fully conforms to the safety standards. For example, the lamps must be properly aligned so as to prevent unnecessary glare and distractions to other road users. The electrical wiring system must be connected properly to ensure it is safe and does not pose a fire risk.

Motorists who wish to modify their vehicles but are unsure of the requirements can seek LTA’s advice before proceeding with the modification works. Information on the fitting of daytime running lights and HIDs is available at www.onemotoring.com.sg .

We thank Mr. Hng for the opportunity to explain the guidelines.
