Audible signals from 6.30am to 9pm

Media Replies 27 Apr 2013

We refer to Mr Chin Kee Thou’s letter, “Audible signals at traffic lights needed” (TNP, 15 April 2013).

To cater to the needs of commuters from the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped and the Singapore School for the Visually Handicapped, we have installed audible signals at the three pedestrian crossings at the junction outside Caldecott MRT Station. These pedestrian crossings are also equipped with the Green Man + function, which allows extra green man time for the disabled when they use their Green Man + cards to activate the feature. The audible signals are also installed at all the pedestrian crossings at two nearby junctions at Lorong 1 Toa Payoh/Toa Payoh Rise and Toa Payoh Rise/Thomson Road/Olive Road.

The audio signals installed at the pedestrian crossings outside the Caldecott Station operate daily between 6.30am and 9pm. The operating times of the audio signals are determined by the usage patterns of the crossing and may be adjusted based on public feedback. In setting the operating time, we also take care not to disturb residents in the surrounding area at night.

We have explained to Mr Chin and will consider his request to adjust the operating time of audio signals at the pedestrian crossings outside the Caldecott Station.  We thank him for the opportunity to clarify.
