Bus routes meant to serve majority of commuters

Media Replies 25 May 2012

BUS services are routed to serve the greatest number of commuters in a given location, which is the case in the example cited in Mr Lee Ser Wei's letter ('Residents made to take long bus route to MRT station'; The Straits Times Interactive, May 9).

Before diverting a bus service, we assess the impact on existing commuters, and ensure that the diversion continues to benefit the majority of commuters.

Following feedback from residents asking for a more direct connection from Toa Payoh Town to Caldecott MRT station, we worked with SBS Transit to divert service 235 to provide a faster link.

This diversion was implemented after our study showed that existing demand could support only one bus service to Caldecott MRT station, and diverting services 59 or 231 would have negatively impacted more residents in terms of longer journey time and higher fares.

Lorong 1 Toa Payoh residents who prefer a bus journey to a walk can also reach Caldecott MRT station by taking services 59 or 231 to the bus stop outside Block 111, and transferring to service 235 at the bus stop opposite the road.

Alternatively, they may take either service to the bus stops in front of or opposite Block 128 in Lorong 1 Toa Payoh and walk to Caldecott MRT station.

To make the final stretch more comfortable, we will, by the end of this year, provide a sheltered linkway between the bus stop opposite Block 128 in Lorong 1 Toa Payoh and Caldecott MRT station in Toa Payoh Rise for the convenience of residents walking to the station.

We thank Mr Lee for his feedback as we take the input of commuters in our ongoing review of bus routes.
