World Car-Free Day 2026

Every year around 22 September, cities across the globe celebrate World Car-Free Day to encourage motorists to give up their cars for a day.

The event highlights the benefits of a car-lite lifestyle, including reduced air pollution, lower carbon footprint and walking and cycling in a safer environment.

World Car-Free Day showcases how our cities might look, feel, and sound if we go car-lite!

The Invisible City Quest

Join us this September for World Car-Free Day and discover more in every move towards a greener, healthier lifestyle.

Take part in The Invisible City Quest, an interactive gamified mobile experience developed by LTA in partnership with GovTech Singapore and other government agencies and organisations. Accessible via the CrowdTaskSG platform, participants will complete location-based objectives by walking, cycling and taking public transport to destinations across Singapore. As you complete each objective, watch the region illuminate and recover fragments on a virtual map of Singapore – rediscovering familiar neighbourhoods and public spaces while learning more about the places and communities that shape everyday life.

As you explore the city, keep your steps going! Healthy 365 app users can earn a special-edition World Car-Free Day badge by clocking at least 10,000 steps for four consecutive days during the challenge period (14 to 30 September). Families can also join in the fun through the POSB Smart Buddy Explore Singapore Steps Challenge (1 to 22 September), where children can track their steps using the Smart Buddy app while completing The Invisible City Quest together.

How to play
  • Follow the map: Explore objective pins grouped by regions across Singapore and visit the locations to check in and complete the activities.
  • Complete the activities: Snap photos, answer questions, and share your thoughts as you uncover the stories and hidden gems of each location.
  • Illuminate the city: Watch each region on the map illuminate and recover fragments as you complete an objective and its associated activities. Complete at least one objective in each of the five regions to fully illuminate the map and enter the lucky draw for top prizes. Bring your fully illuminated map to the Joo Chiat Car-Free Day on 3 October (3.30pm-9.30pm) for a chance to win an additional token!

Rewards

Earn up to 100 virtual coins on CrowdTaskSG for each activity completed under an objective. Virtual coins can be used to redeem cash rewards at any participating merchant that supports NETS QR code payment.

Joo Chiat Car-Free Day (3 October 2026, 3.30pm – 9.30pm)

As part of World Car-Free Day, a stretch of Joo Chiat Road between Dunman Road and East Coast Road will be closed to traffic, inviting you to explore one of Singapore's most beloved heritage neighbourhoods on foot or by bicycle.

Co-created with community partners, local businesses and residents, the event features interactive exhibits, sustainability showcases and family-friendly activities for all ages – from the Urban Sustainability Bike Tour and Heritage Fitness Challenge to pickleball, rollerblading or digital skills workshops.

As evening falls, the community takes centre stage with heritage and cultural experiences rooted in Katong and Joo Chiat's storied past, including the Kueh Party, live performances and community activities.

Come experience how our streets can be transformed into vibrant community spaces, and discover a greener, more people-friendly way to enjoy the city.

More information on the event will be updated here. If you have any questions or require assistance regarding the road closure, please contact the event organiser at carfreeday@ppurpose.com .
