W.A.S.P project - MOT Minister innovation merit AWARD; niqcc gold award; ietex award

LTA conducts numerous operations for the lifting of heavy and bulky loads near existing road and rail infrastructure in close proximity to the public. Besides having a robust risk assessment of all lifting operations, developing of detailed lifting plans, close supervision is required. One of the challenges is dependency on the competency and coordination of the lifting team, who relays instructions on movements of the load to the crane operator. Any error in judgment on the part of the lifting team or operator could result in collision of the load with the surrounding structures. Accidents of any kind could cripple Singapore’s transportation network.

To enhance lifting operations, LTA Safety Division has developed the Wireless Anti-collision Sensory Protection (W.A.S.P) device. This device consists of a sensor attached on the load to detect any potential collisions along the lifting path. The sensor transmits wireless signals to a receiving device placed in the crane operator’s cabin. The receiving device illuminates and displays the real time distance between the load and the existing structure or obstacle. Simultaneously, a beeping sound, which increases in frequency as the load draws closer to any obstacle, is emitted in the cabin. This real-time warning system provides the operator with ample warning to stop the lift before a collision occurs and reduces human error of the lifting team. In addition, it also enhances productivity in lifting operations.
