Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) is a process that applies behavioural analysis methods to achieve continuous improvement in safety performance.
Based on international research of the “accident pyramid”, the large numbers of unsafe behaviours and conditions at the bottom of the pyramid will inevitably lead to accidents and incidents. Studies have also shown that unsafe behaviour is a key contributing cause of accidents. Therefore, reducing unsafe behaviours would help to eliminate serious accidents.
LTA embarked on BBS in 2010 through a pilot programme on a rail and a road project. BBS programme is currently implemented in all our major rail and road projects.
To facilitate the implementation of BBS, we provided our contractors with BBS “Train-The-Trainer” program as well as the use of an online platform for input of site observations and analysis of behavioural trends.
