School Zones are areas around schools, identified by “School Zone” signs at the start and end of the zone.
In 2004, “SLOW" and "SCHOOL” road markings and red-textured road surfaces have been added to alert motorists that they are approaching a school zone. But the Committee is enhancing these measures.
New road safety initiatives will be introduced at ten primary schools around Singapore include lowering the speed limit to 40km/h during certain hours of school activity, and making signs more visible with flashing lights. These aim to get drivers to slow down. Others include messages at zebra crossings to remind students to watch out for traffic before crossing the roads.
These will be extended to other schools progressively.
The committee is also working on coming up with creative and engaging ways to teach school children how to stay safe on the road.
