Braddell bottleneck being addressed

Media Replies 05 Dec 2012

We refer to Mr Michael Bah Soung’s letter (‘Braddell's perennial peak-hour bottleneck’, Straits Times Online, 23 Nov).

While we make best efforts to ensure that our road network flows smoothly, unexpected situations, such as the fallen tree along Braddell Road on 13 November, can result in traffic delay for motorists.

Braddell Road experiences high traffic demand as it is part of the strategic road link in the Outer Ring Road system that allows motorists to travel between the east and the west of the island without the need to pass through the city. It also serves major residential areas such as Toa Payoh and Bishan. We have been monitoring the traffic conditions along Braddell Road closely and are aware of the heavy traffic conditions experienced during the morning and evening peak hours. To ease the traffic conditions experienced, as well as to meet longer term growth in traffic demand,  we will be widening the stretch of Braddell Road between Toa Payoh North Flyover and Braddell Flyover from dual-three lanes to dual-five lanes. The construction works are expected to commence in early Jan 2013 and complete by end 2015.

As part of this widening project, LTA will also be constructing a new single lane flyover to allow right- turning traffic from Toa Payoh to connect directly with the Braddell Underpass (towards Paya Lebar) and improve traffic flow at Lorong 1/Lorong 6 Toa Payoh and Lorong 1/Lorong 4 Toa Payoh junctions.
