Steps to Boost Commuter Safety at LRT Stations

Media Replies 17 Jan 2013

We would like to thank Mr Ang Chin Guan (“Improve safety at LRT stations”, ST, 8 Jan) for his suggestion to have a safe waiting zone similar to Taiwan’s rail station platforms.

The platform space at LRT stations is limited. With safety a priority, LTA works closely with the public transport operators (PTOs) to put in place measures to address commuter safety.

Beyond operators’ regular broadcast messages reminding passengers to stand behind the yellow lines, passengers can also activate the train stop buttons at the platforms in the event of an emergency. The operators also deploy service staff during peak hours at crowded LRT stations to manage commuter movement and maintain crowd control. Lastly, posters throughout the LRT platforms provide a visual cue to commuters to take care of their personal safety, especially not to stand at the edge of the platform.

LTA will continue to work with the PTOs to monitor and review the current safety measures if necessary.
