We refer to Soh Ah Yuen’s letter ‘A new depot at an already congested Loyang?’ (TODAY, 31 May 2013).
We understand residents’ concerns about the location of the new Loyang Bus Depot, but with existing depots reaching full capacity, the depots like the one in Loyang are needed to operate bus services under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP).
Our planning has taken into consideration that most buses depart/return to the depot during off-peak periods, and thus, bus operations at the depot are not likely to adversely affect traffic along Loyang Avenue during peak periods. To further ensure minimal impact of bus movement on the flow of traffic along Loyang Avenue, LTA will also build a new dual two-lane road within the Loyang Industrial Estate to connect to Pasir Ris Drive 3. Buses will access the depot via this new road which will be completed before the start of the depot operation. These measures, together with adjustments to traffic light timing, will also address pedestrian safety.
As with any new development , we will monitor the site and related traffic and safety conditions when the depot operation begins, and if necessary, make further adjustments.
