News Releases 02 Feb 2015 Walk2Ride Programme

LTA awards two contracts worth $143.8 million to improve
sheltered walkway connectivity to public transport nodes

Commuters who walk to their ride on the public transport network can look forward to a more pleasant experience when the Walk2Ride programme to add more than 200km of new sheltered walkways is completed by 2018.

2. Under the Walk2Ride programme, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded two contracts worth $143.8 million to Or Kim Peow Contractors Pte Ltd. The first contract, which covers 38 LRT stations in Bukit Panjang, Sengkang and Punggol, is awarded for $60.9 million. The second contract, which covers 29 MRT stations in the central and southern area of Singapore as well as Bukit Merah bus interchange, is awarded for $82.9 million. Works for these two contracts are expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2015 and will complete progressively by 2018.

3. LTA has awarded the first two contracts in May last year for the provision of sheltered walkways around 59 MRT stations in the north-eastern and north-western part of Singapore. Works have already started for the two contracts.

4. Please refer to Annex A for the list of the locations covered under the two contracts.

About the Walk2Ride Programme

5. Currently, sheltered walkways are provided from transport nodes to schools and health care facilities within a 200m radius. Sheltered walkways are also provided within residential estates by the Town Councils.

6. Under the Walk2Ride programme, which was announced in January 2013, LTA will expand the coverage of the sheltered walkway network by ensuring sheltered connectivity between transport nodes and schools, health care facilities, residential developments and public amenities within a 400m radius of all MRT stations and within a 200m radius of all LRT stations and bus interchanges. The Walk2Ride programme will also connect about 100 existing bus shelters with high usage to trip generating hubs within a 200m radius of these bus shelters.

7. Besides sheltered walkways, LTA will also ensure barrier-free connectivity with signage and network maps for a comfortable, convenient and seamless journey when commuters transit between transport nodes.
