Seniors staying in the vicinity of Jurong West Street 52 will benefit from senior-friendly road safety features with the completion of the new Silver Zone in the estate.
2. Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Health, and Chairman of the Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety Committee (PCSC), Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim as well as Minister of State for National Development, and Advisor to Jurong GRC Grassroots Organisations, Mr Desmond Lee launched the Silver Zone this morning. At the launch, Associate Professor Faishal said, “As our population is ageing, the Land Transport Authority has taken steps to make our housing estates safer for seniors, beginning with locations with higher senior populations. We launched the first Silver Zone in Bukit Merah View last October, and this has been welcomed by residents, especially seniors. We are making good progress with the second Silver Zone launched today and I believe that Jurong West residents too will find their neighbourhood safer with these added safety features.”
3. Announced in March 2014, the Silver Zone programme involves the installation of senior-friendly road safety features in residential areas with high senior populations, relatively higher accident rates involving seniors and proximity to senior amenities. These features are customised to site conditions and remind motorists to slow down and look out for pedestrians, as well as urge senior pedestrians to exercise greater care when crossing the road. Jurong West Street 52 is one of five locations earmarked for the programme (see Annex for examples and descriptions of road safety features at the Jurong West Silver Zone).
4. The first Silver Zone in Bukit Merah was launched in October 2014, and a perception survey conducted after its completion showed that residents have responded positively. About 92% of pedestrians surveyed felt that the senior-friendly measures have enhanced road safety in the area.
5. Following the completion of the Silver Zone in Jurong West, Silver Zones in Yishun and Bedok will be completed by the fourth quarter of this year, and Marine Parade by the second quarter of 2016.
The sites are located in five towns, namely Bukit Merah, Jurong West, Bedok, Marine Parade and Yishun.
