Recognised Among Top 50 Feats that Engineered Singapore’s Success
Eleven completed land transport projects will go down in history amongst the top 50 engineering feats that contributed to Singapore’s success since independence.
2 This accolade was presented to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Top 50 Engineering Feats @ IES-SG50 Award. The award recognises the top 50 engineering achievements across the various fields of engineering that have made the greatest economic, infrastructural or societal impact to Singapore since 1965.
3 Chief Executive (LTA) Mr Chew Men Leong said: “We are honoured to be recognised for these 11 projects which are engineering accomplishments that will go down in history as the 50 Engineering Feats of Singapore. The land transport engineering pioneers have made significant contributions to the building of our nation and changed the lives and commuting experiences for many of us today. Over the next few years, we can expect to see several new infrastructure projects all over the island. For example, works on the Thomson – East Coast Line are going on in full swing and following that, we have the Jurong Region Line, Cross Island Line and the North South Corridor. These are exciting times for land transport and I invite more engineers to join us on these challenging projects”.
4 The winning projects cut across various areas from rolling out Singapore’s first Mass Rapid Transit System to building the first undersea expressway, the Marina Coastal Expressway.
The 11 winning projects[1] are:
- The First Mass Rapid Transit System
- Driverless Mass Rapid System (North East Line)
- Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway
- Marina Coastal Expressway
- Constructing new MRT tunnels crossing existing operational MRT lines
- Construction MRT tunnels that undercrosss the Singapore River
- World's First Electronic Road Pricing (ERP)
- Symphony for ePayment - CEPAS Card
- The Esplanade Bridge
- Downtown Line Bugis station*
- Contactless smart card reader for MRT stations*

About the Top 50 Engineering Feats @ IES-SG50 Award
In 2015, The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) launched Engineering Feats @ IES-SG50, a national competition to seek out and recognise the top 50 engineering achievements across the various fields of engineering deemed to have made the greatest economic, infrastructural or societal impact to Singapore since 1965.
Since then, project owners and engineers from more than 20 industry sectors have submitted their nominations. From 1st of March 2016, IES has put 113 shortlisted entries up for public voting. The 50 projects with the highest number of votes will clinch the title of Top 50 Engineering Feats.
[1]*The DTL Bugis station and contactless smart card reader for MRT stations projects were submitted by consultants Arup consultants and Alain Dupuis respectively, with LTA listed as the project owner.
