The director of car exporter Southern Cars Pte Ltd was charged in court today under the Road Traffic Act (RTA) for the unlawful possession of deregistered vehicles which have been declared as exported, and for making false declarations to the Land Transport Authority (LTA).
2 He faces a total of 40 charges – 20 charges for the possession of 20 deregistered vehicles, and another 20 charges for making false declarations to the LTA in relation to these vehicles between November 2019 and May 2021. The case was uncovered during an LTA sting operation in June 2021.
3 LTA would like to remind both car exporters and the public that it is a serious offence to possess or use a deregistered vehicle in Singapore, as these vehicles are uninsured. Offenders may be charged in court and fined up to $2,000 or jailed up to three months or both for the first offence. Repeat offenders may be fined up to $5,000 or jailed up to six months, or both, for each charge. In addition, those found to have made false or misleading declarations to the LTA may be fined up to $5,000 or jailed up to 12 months, or both, for each charge.
