The owner of Fong Kim Exhaust Racing Development Private Limited was charged in court today under the Road Traffic Act (RTA) for performing illegal vehicle modifications. He faces three charges for replacing two cars’ exhaust systems with unapproved exhaust systems on three separate occasions between 2019 to 2021.
Modifying a vehicle illegally is a serious offence. Such illegal exhaust modification affects the durability and reliability of the vehicle and increases the safety risks to both the driver and other road users. It may also result in excessive noise and cause public nuisance.
Motorists are required to seek LTA’s approval before installing after-market exhaust systems. Only certified exhaust systems, which have undergone stringent testing in compliance with international standards and are compatible with that particular make and model of the vehicle will be allowed. These exhaust systems are also required to meet the prevailing noise and exhaust emission requirements set by the National Environment Agency.
LTA takes a serious view of illegal modifications as they may pose serious safety and environmental hazards. We strongly advise workshops and individuals to refrain from illegally modifying or using modified vehicles, as offenders can be fined up to $5,000, imprisoned up to three months, or both. The penalties for repeat offenders are doubled.
Vehicle owners should check if their planned modifications comply with LTA’s guidelines before proceeding. More information on vehicle modifications can be found on the One Motoring website.
