We refer to Mr Yang Wujun and Ms Han Xuemei’s letters (10 June 2022) on the construction of cycling paths.
LTA seeks to balance the conservation of our environment with the development of transport infrastructure to better serve Singaporeans. We work closely with other agencies with the aim of minimising the number of trees affected in any project, while considering space constraints on the ground. Where trees are affected, we work with agencies, and experts such as arborists, to look into tree transplanting and replacement planting.
The new cycling paths along Jurong Town Hall Road provide additional inter-town connectivity, to connect residents from Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Batok and Tengah to the Jurong Lake District. They will also link to the existing cycling network in the Jurong Lake District, to provide better walking and cycling connectivity for residents. This complements the existing jogging track which is located closer to the HDB estate and mainly serves the recreational needs of residents within the estate (e.g. taking strolls, and getting to estate recreational facilities such as the children’s playground).
For Yishun, LTA is building cycling paths along major roads such as Yishun Avenue 1 to improve the connectivity of the existing path network. The new paths will also provide residents with more direct cycling connectivity to transport nodes such as Khatib MRT station.
In these projects, studies were conducted to minimise the impact to existing greenery, prior to starting work. We have also set aside space for new greenery and will be replanting more trees than those affected once the cycling paths are completed, e.g. in Yishun, we will be providing replacement planting in consultation with agencies. LTA is committed to continue improving transport accessibility for Singaporeans in a green and sustainable manner.
