By 2025, 325 pedestrian crossings will be installed with 24/7 on-demand audible traffic signals across ten town centres as part of efforts under the Enabling Masterplan 2030 for a more inclusive Singapore.
2. This initiative will be progressively rolled out, first in Tampines and Bedok from June 2023. The other eight towns are Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Merah, Choa Chu Kang, Jurong West, Sengkang, Toa Payoh, Woodlands and Yishun. These towns were chosen as they have a higher proportion of Persons with Visual Impairment (PwVIs) than other towns.
3. At these crossings with 24/7 on-demand audible traffic signals, a subtle locating tone to help PwVIs locate the crossing will be emitted 24/7. After 9pm, a crossing tone will only be activated when a PwVI pedestrian taps their Persons with Disabilities (PwD) Concession Card on the Green Man + card reader.
4. The implementation of the 24/7 on-demand audible traffic signals will better enable persons with disabilities to navigate independently during their commutes, across all periods of the day. It contributes towards our vision for a more inclusive land transport system, and is part of efforts under the Enabling Masterplan 2030 (EMP2030)’s focal area Inclusive Transport. The EMP2030 is Singapore’s fourth Enabling Masterplan which sets out the vision for Singapore as an inclusive society in 2030. For more information, visit https://go.gov.sg/emp2030.
