LTA Partners PCF Sparkletots to Develop Safe Path Sharing Content
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has partnered PCF Sparkletots to co-create a children’s storybook titled ‘Rico & His Glowie – A Book About Sharing Paths’. This collaboration aims to foster safe and responsible path-sharing behaviours among young children aged between three to six. It is part of LTA’s ongoing efforts to promote responsible path use among path users.
2. The book was officially launched by Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport this morning during a storytelling session with students from PCF Sparkletots Tampines North Blk 492. Apart from the storytelling session, the students also participated in an arts and crafts activity to create their very own versions of ‘Glowie’, a character from the book that helps Rico differentiate between safe and unsafe path-sharing behaviours.
3. ‘Rico & His Glowie – A Book About Sharing Paths’ is a vibrant children’s book that uses colourful illustrations and catchy rhymes to introduce young children to various active mobility modes and safe path-sharing practices. The story follows Rico, the main character, on his journey to the playground with his mother. Along the way, Rico learns about desired behaviours when walking and cycling on shared paths.
4. This is the second collaboration between LTA and PCF Sparkletots. In 2021, a storybook ‘Max & Robbie’s Magical Train Ride’ was co-created with students from PCF Sparkletots (Blk 723 Nee Soon Central) as part of the Graciousness on Public Transport Campaign. The book focused on gracious commuting on public transport.
5. Recognising the importance of shaping behaviours from young, LTA has been expanding its outreach to schools. In 2023, LTA introduced the Path Safety Programme for primary and secondary schools which combines existing initiatives such as the 'Confidence on Wheels’ programme and assembly talks, with new recess time activities. More details on the Path Safety Programme can be found in Annex A. LTA also collaborates with partners such as the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) and Municipal Service Office (MSO) to promote considerate path behaviours (See Annex B).
6. The electronic version of ‘Rico & His Glowie – A Book About Sharing Paths’ is available for download on the LTA website at www.go.gov.sg/safepathsharingbook. The storybooks will also be available for loan at all public libraries from November 2024.
