The Punggol Coast station on the North East Line (NEL), located in the heart of Punggol Digital District (PDD), will open for passenger service at 3.00pm today. Earlier this morning, Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat and Grassroots Advisers from the Pasir Ris - Punggol Group Representation Constituency attended the ceremony to mark the opening of the station.
2. With the opening of the new terminal station, the NEL will have 17 stations, spanning 22 kilometres from Punggol Coast to HarbourFront. Over 200,000 households are within a 10-minute walk from a NEL station.
3. Commuters from Punggol North near Punggol Coast station can now enjoy shorter travel times to the city centre and other parts of Singapore. For example, commuters travelling from Punggol North to Outram Park will take about 45 minutes, as compared to about 60 minutes previously. Punggol Coast station will also provide greater rail connectivity to the JTC Business Park and the Singapore Institute of Technology, as well as the upcoming Punggol Coast Mall.
4. Punggol Coast station has two entrances: one along New Punggol Road and the other within PDD. To facilitate convenient first-and-last mile journeys to and from the station, covered linkways have been provided for seamless connectivity to nearby bus stops, taxi stands, as well as pick-up and drop-off points. To support active mobility, more than 300 bicycle parking lots are also available for cyclists.
5. Punggol Coast station was designed in-house by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), and its construction was jointly managed by LTA and JTC. The station has been awarded the Green Mark Platinum Certification under BCA’s Green Mark for Transit Station scheme for its use of environmentally-friendly building materials and energy-efficient systems, including a hybrid cooling approach which comprises (i) tapping on PDD’s District Cooling System (DCS) for air-conditioning within the station; and (ii) fans at the station platform level. Additionally, the station also uses automatic dual speed escalators; sleep-mode enabled lifts; and LED lighting systems. The station is seamlessly integrated with PDD and is the first station designed with a public space at its entrance to serve as a venue for events and community programmes, which will foster better community engagement and interaction.
6. The station also features an artwork titled “Trajectories” by local artist, Zul Othman (ZERO). Inspired by his personal experiences growing up in Punggol and now living in Northshore, the piece captures the past, present and future of Punggol through a visual time lapse of Punggol’s developments.
