Improve safety measures at bus stops

Media Replies 25 Apr 2024 road safety bus stops

We refer to Mr Liang Shui An and Mr Liu Jiaming’s letters (18 and 20 April 2024) on cyclists riding through bus stops. We thank them for their concerns on the safety of commuters.

As we expand our cycling path network, we will build bypass paths behind bus stops, wherever possible. For the safety of cyclists and commuters, particularly those boarding or alighting from buses, cyclists should use these paths where available. Where such bypass paths are not available, cyclists should look out for users around the bus stops, including dismounting and walking their devices.

We also thank Mr Liu for his suggestion to install additional bollards at bus stops. However, bus stops are designed to be accessible for all commuters and path users, including those on wheelchairs or with prams. We therefore avoid installing such barriers where possible. Instead, markings and speed strips are implemented to remind riders to slow down as they approach bus stops.

We are also pressing on with public education efforts, and will take action against irresponsible behaviours that endanger others.
