We refer to Mr Huang Qing Xiang’s letter (Public transport services and facilities need to be improved, 16 April 2024).
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been providing better access to information on bus routes and arrival timings over the years. Aside from information panels which provide route information for each service calling at the bus stop, more than 270 bus stops currently have a digital Passenger Information Display System (PIDS) installed which provides information such as incoming buses and bus arrival timings.
Since 2018, all new buses are also equipped with the PIDS. This includes an on-board display providing route-specific information such as bus service number, destination and upcoming stops, with audio announcements for the next stop.
Today, this is available on around 700 buses and will be progressively extended to the remaining fleet as buses are renewed. Another 1,000 buses are equipped with audio announcements for the next stop.
In addition, commuters can access route-specific information through LTA’s MyTransport.SG mobile application or similar mobile applications, including their real-time location on the route. Alternatively, commuters may approach the Bus Captain for assistance.
Mr Huang also raised the question of why some traffic light crossings required push button activation. As observed by Mr Huang, these buttons allow pedestrians to indicate their intention to cross. During periods of pedestrian inactivity, the traffic light timings are adjusted automatically to optimise traffic flow.
At busy junctions with high pedestrian traffic throughout the day, the green man activation is automated for more efficient movement of pedestrians.
We thank Mr Huang for his feedback and will continue our efforts to improve access to information and convenience for commuters, pedestrians and motorists.
