We thank Mr Keanen Ang for his letter “Look at rejuvenating Circle Line too” (March 12).
The Circle Line (CCL) connects commuters to different MRT lines _ hence interchange stations along CCL can be more crowded during peak periods.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) monitors passenger loading on the CCL closely to make the best use of its capacity to meet travel demand and, when required, work with the train operator to inject more trains.
In the first half of 2026, we will close the loop of the CCL, with three new stations added: Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward Road. With the completed CCL, which will have interchanges with all the existing MRT lines, passengers will have more alternative routes to bypass busy interchanges. This will in turn reduce waiting and travel times, as well as better distribute passenger flow across our MRT network.
LTA will also be adding 23 new trains to CCL when the loop is closed in 2026, increasing the fleet from 64 to 87 trains and improving train frequencies when there is high demand, including along busier stretches that typically see higher passenger volumes.
As we expand our rail network, we are also adding more capacity, options and resilience. From 2030, the Cross Island Line will help to increase capacity for travel between the north-east and the west, and create new options for commuters travelling between the North East Line, North-South Line and East-West Line. We are also looking into the feasibility of other new lines.
